Young Guts Scholar Program

The Young Guts Scholar Program is sponsored by the Dr. Harvey Young Education and Development Foundation in collaboration with the American Gastroenterology Association.

The objective of this program is to encourage students from racial/ethnic/socioeconomic groups traditionally underrepresented in biomedical research to pursue careers in science or medicine. The ultimate goal is to produce a diverse and inclusive group of healthcare providers and investigators.

Supporting young students through this type of scholarship is a good investment for the future of U.S. health care. Patients are more comfortable and receptive to healthcare providers who share similar life experiences. By attracting more underrepresented students to healthcare education, the U.S. healthcare workforce will be enriched and will lead to better healthcare for all.

The Young Guts Scholars are either second- or third-year undergraduate college students from all over the U.S. The mentors are Gastroenterology faculty members throughout the U.S. as well. These students will spend a whole year in their mentor’s research program. This scholarship will therefore offer a much more robust experience than the more common summer student programs that will last for only ten weeks.

From a large group of well qualified applicants, six outstanding students were selected to the inaugural class of 2022. Funding needed for each student is about $10,000 per year. Support in any amount from donors will be deeply appreciated. Thank you!
